The Protecting Veil

Special performances of John Tavener’s timeless classic in the intimate and atmospheric Greek Orthodox cathedral where he worshipped, accompanied on the programme by Arvo Pärt's equally iconic Tabula Rasa (A Blank Slate).

Britten Sinfonia and star cellist Guy Johnston bring their acclaimed performance of John Tavener’s intensely beautiful The Protecting Veil to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of the Divine Wisdom (St Sophia), Bayswater, where the composer was a member of the congregation.

“One of the later 20th century’s most beloved and moving works” (Gramophone magazine), this timeless classic is full of intimacy and emotion. One of the very few cellists to have worked with Tavener, Guy Johnston is the soloist and central character, transcendent amidst Britten Sinfonia’s heady layers of sound.

These limited-capacity concerts will feature dramatic lighting and will be filmed for future release by opera singer and film director Andrew Staples.
