The Royal Philatelic Society London
15 Abchurch Lane, London, United Kingdom
An exhibition of the philatelic material at the Royal Philatelic Society London will be open from 11am to 4.30pm on Friday 24th October.
As part of this all day event, Steve McGill, FRPSL will be presenting an overview of the Machin definitive series of Great Britain postage stamps. The presentation, scheduled to start at 2pm, will focus on the driving aspects of the stamps that have produced over 7,000 catalogued varieties.
Seats for the presentation are limited, so be sure to get your ticket for this talk.
The presentation will be accompanied by three exhibits covering the development of postal mechanisation in the United Kingdom that explain the complex origin of the series’ phosphorescence varieties; the denominated printings and Non-Value Indicated printings. The series possibly represents the most reproduced image in the history of printing.
The presentation will cover a range of printings from archival material to the cutting-edge 2-D barcode stamps and will touch on the artistry, printing processes, phosphor/fluor, paper & gum, perforation and security techniques. A discussion of catalogues and material availability is included as well as a brief introduction to the counterfeits of the series. This series is particularly notable because it inherited its technical aspects from the Wildings and was contemporaneous with the enormous expansion of postal automation from the 1960’s through to the present day.
Mr. McGill will be available throughout the day to discuss this remarkable 50+ years of the definitive series and to answer any questions. He will plan to give tours of the exhibits during the day.
