Removing Barriers, Forging Paths: Intersectional approaches to supporting students with a disability

Summary: This conference aims to explore intersectional approaches to addressing the disadvantages experienced by students with disabilities and neurodivergence when transitioning from sixth form/FE college to higher education. It will be an opportunity to share best practice in using creative ways to support transition, and to pass on practical information which can be used by practitioners to support students and their families.

Objectives:

· To give delegates best examples of how SEND students can be supported at university

· To explore issues related to specific forms of SEND and how these can be supported

· To address specific issues related to disclosure and role for practitioners in supporting this

· To build confidence and expertise in delegates in relation to their ability to support SEND students

· To help SENCOs and Careers Leaders in school think through how they can support each other’s work with SEND students

Specific areas which could be addressed:

· Mental health support

· Apprenticeships

· How the information recorded in the EHCP process might support transition

· Identifying and supporting undiagnosed needs in HE context

· Best practice in welcoming new students

· The DSC

· Abrahart implications

· Practical information for careers practitioners supporting students in school/FE

Audience:

SENCOs, Careers Leads, SEND practitioners working in IAG roles, LA SEND staff, 3rd sector staff supporting SEND students, HEI staff supporting SEND students.
