queer afrofuturism: reclaiming the Black body and imaginary

Join us for a transformative workshop exploring the radical possibilities of Queer Afrofuturism—a visionary space where Black queer bodies, identities, and futures are centered, celebrated, and liberated.

Through interactive discussion, creative expression, embodied practices and collective imagination, we will:

• Reclaim and reimagine Black queer narratives beyond the limitations of colonial, cis-heteronormative frameworks
• Explore how Afrofuturism opens portals to new worlds where Black queer life is sovereign, expansive, and thriving
• Engage with speculative practices—art, writing, movement—that stretch the boundaries of what is possible
• Build community around shared visions of freedom, pleasure, and joy

This workshop is open to Black folks (including those who are dual heritage) who are curious about the intersections of queerness, Blackness, futurism, and liberation. Whether you're an artist, activist, academic, or dreamer—you are welcome here.

Facilitators - Kambua (she/her) and Kim (they/she)

Kambua is the founder of Unruly Beauty, a platform that interrogates the politics of appearance. We explore how bodies are read, regulated, and assigned meaning through social, cultural, and institutional lenses. At the core of our inquiry is the Black body—not as spectacle, but as subject, as witness, as living archive. Our work examines how power moves through flesh, determining whose visibility grants freedom and whose demands surveillance or erasure. Kim is the director of Black Psychotherapy, a mental health service providing decolonial, intersectional and anti-oppressive therapy for Black and racially minoritised communities alongside education, training and consultancy on liberation and justice-based apporaches to mental health and wellbeing. The team run a low-cost community clinic at Pop Brixton and also offer sessions virtually to clients across London, as well as the UK.
