We're meeting this Monday, 6th January for our first session of 2025.
if you are new or returning after 1 year or more away the cost is £10.
I hope you had a good Christmas and New Year. Over Christmas I watched 'Memoir of A Snail', and in it there is a wonderful line: "life can only be understood backwards, but we have to live it forwards." This reminded me of an approach to making New Year resolutions that is based on imaging your life backwards, reflecting on what your regrets would be if you were looking back at your life so that you can make choices now that lead to a more fulfilling life.
For example if you imagine looking back at your life and you recognise that right now you're so busy you make no time to see friends, and looking back you regret that you didn't relax and laugh more with friends, you can make a resolve for this year to make regular friend time - for example committing to doing two social things per month. You then put this on a post-it note on the fridge or write it somewhere you will see daily so you have a reminder. The person I learnt this from gave the example of feeling sad as he looked back over his life seeing how busy he was and how little time he spent with his children - missing seeing them as they grew up, so he resolved to have 5 meals a weak with his family.
I find this a more powerful way of making resolutions, because I'm not making a wish list of how the best version of myself would behave. Instead I'm feeling into my core values and making resolutions based on what matters to me. We are the stories we tell ourselves, and it is so easy to get stuck in a Groundhog Day repetition 0f unhelpful and deleting narratives. The New Year gives an opportunity to look at our patterns of behaviour, see which are serving us and develop and sustain them, and see which are detrimental to us and can be changed or let go of.
If you've not seen the film'Memoir of A Snail' it is really beautiful, the trailer is below. I use a board to write my monthly intentions on along with some 'chalk' pens. If you want to try this the link for the board is here:
