Account Hackney, in collaboration with The Black Curriculum, is delighted to present Microscope into Society: Corporate Hands in Further Education Colleges, a report on the corporate takeover and mismanagement of BSix College. Account is pleased to offer one of the first comprehensive analyses of the realities surrounding college mergers and the corporate management of further education colleges.
Once a pillar of the community and a shining example of the success of alternative education models, such as the Knowledge is Power programme, BSix has been in the public eye since the announcement of its merger with New City College. As shown, promises made were not kept. Valued educators were dismissed, and students experienced their opportunities diminishing.
This report is the result of months of dedicated effort, gathering data from interviews and carefully examining policy documents. The investigation revealed a stark picture of the corporatisation of further education colleges: communities robbed of their anchors, replaced by unfamiliar, detached institutions.
Please join us on 28 February at City Academy, Hackney Homerton Row, London, E9 6EA, from 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm, as we share the report's findings.
There will be keynote addresses from Diane Abotte MP, TEDx Speaker Busayo Twins, and L'myah Sherae, founder of Enact Equality. A panel discussion will follow, featuring former Director of Education and Lifelong Learning at Hackney Council Gus John, the Black Curriculum’s Young Champions, former BSix students, and Hackney Account members. Refreshments will be provided.
As always, the fight for education endures.
