Maz Murray, Plot Hole

Maz Murray, Bri Leung and Munesu Mukombe present Plot Hole, a collaborative performance that explores theatricality using set design, sonic manipulations and plot holes as storytelling devices.

Plot Hole is an attempted escape route from meaning, using the deconstructed trappings of contemporary show business and live podcast recordings. Marking a step-ball-change in Murray’s practice, the performance will mix dance, slapstick and representation at its most pure – a fake hole in the floor.

This performance is part of the public programme of Hilary Lloyd, Very High Frequency, a layered installation that combines audiovisual elements with archival materials and performative interludes to stage a non-linear encounter with the work of trailblazing playwright, television dramatist and writer Dennis Potter (b. 1935–d. 1994).

About Maz Murray

Maz Murray (b. Basildon, 1995) is an artist working across film, writing, collage and installation. Murray uses satire, surrealism and melodrama to talk about queer and trans identity, class, and the complexities of public life. They subvert pop cultural forms such as music videos, TV documentaries, talk shows, social media content and cinema, using DIY techniques. They’re interested in the creation of artificial landscapes and the struggles that shape them.

In 2024, the artist presented Principal Boy at Focal Point Gallery, their first solo exhibition. Murray is currently working on a collaborative novel with Charlie Markbreiter, published by Montez Press. In 2023, the artist was selected as an awardee of the second edition of the LOEWE FOUNDATION / Studio Voltaire Award.

About Bri Leung

Bri Leung (b. Derby, 1994)  is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice interrogates the discomforting truths and conflicts in diasporic and gendered histories. Her practice explores reclamation across performance, writing, film, sculpture, dramaturgy and facilitation. She is influenced by art history, popular culture and interpersonal relationships. She has performed and exhibited at Pleasance Theatre, Hoxton Hall, Greatorex Street, Somerset House and The Yard Theatre.

About Munesu Mukombe

Munesu Mukombe (b. Dagenham, 1994) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist working across writing, performance and moving image. Her autobiographical work creates intimate, vulnerable spaces for both herself and her audience, offering frameworks to explore abstract emotions around grief, racial oppression, interpersonal relationships and self-actualisation. In collaboration with artist Tawfik Naas, she coined the term “Environment Making” –  a concept that situates art making in a space between world-building and lived reality.
