About the event

Ferrier Prize Lecture: Unravelling the molecular basis of Huntington's disease
Professor Gillian Bates FRS, winner of the Ferrier Medal, will deliver her prize lecture on 6 October 2025, at the Royal Society in London, at 6.30pm.

The Ferrier Medal and Lecture is awarded biennially, to be given on a subject related to the advancement of natural knowledge on the structure and function of the nervous system.

Professor Bates is recognised with the Ferrier Medal for her work in understanding the molecular basis of Huntington’s disease and consistently producing highly impactful findings which have moulded the course of this field. She is Professor of Molecular Neuroscience at the Queen Square Institute of Neurology at UCL and Co-Director of the Huntington’s Disease Centre at UCL.

In this lecture, Professor Bates will present how, over the last 30 years, the Bates lab has been unravelling the first molecular steps by which one mutation causes neuronal dysfunction and neurodegeneration.

This lecture is free to attend. Registration is recommended if attending in person, otherwise availability cannot be guaranteed. Doors will open to the public at 6.00pm.

The lecture will also be livestreamed on the Royal Society website and on the Royal Society YouTube channel.
