A playful introduction to contemporary thread painting.
In this 3-hour class, you’ll explore how to create painterly effects with hand embroidery, using expressive stitches, bold colour, and experimental techniques. Working with a mix of crewel wool, cotton thread, and pre-consumer waste fabric, you’ll be encouraged to break the rules, embrace the unexpected, and develop your own approach to stitched mark-making. No experience necessary.
All materials and equipment provided.
This masterclass taught by the artist Lucy Newman, coincides with her showcase of 3 new pieces of work, on show in our exhibition at the Batsford Gallery. Before your workshop, you will be able to visit the gallery and experience her craftsmanship in thread painting in person before then learning from the artist herself.
About the artist:
Lucy Newman uses thread as paint, exploring botanical forms through the lens of mutation and speculative futures. Her embroidered “paintings” reimagine nature transformed by human intervention, climate change, and technological disruption, emphasising themes of resilience and fragility. Through vibrant colour palettes, intricate detail, and purposeful use of negative space, Newman invites viewers into contemplative reflections on the evolving boundaries between the natural world, mutation, and human influence.
