For most people, the senses operate independently: we see colours, hear sounds, and taste flavours as distinct experiences. But for those with synaesthesia, the boundaries blur: numbers might appear in colour, music might evoke shapes, and words might taste like ice cream!
Today we’re excited to welcome Dr Mary Spiller, Senior Lecturer at the University of East London, to offer us a glimpse into this wondrous phenomenon - a rare condition where senses blend in surprising ways. We’ll explore how the brain connects sight, sound, taste, and touch, and why some people experience these connections more vividly than others. We’ll discuss the ways that studying synaesthesia can help us understand creativity, memory, and the magic of perception.
As a cognitive psychologist, and a synaesthete herself, Mary has researched synaesthesia for the last 20 years, and is passionate about helping people understand what synaesthesia can teach us about the diverse ways our brains can create our perceptual experiences of the world around us.
We're also excited to welcome back Lydia Daisy for some more of her sensorial spoken word!
