Callen Radcliffe Tjader Jr. was an American Latin jazz musician who primarily recorded playing the vibraphone but was also accomplished on the drums, bongos, congas, timbales and piano.
Cal Tjader started his career alongside Dave Brubeck in the late 1940s in San Francisco, playing drums and percussion, before joining George Shearing's mambo group in the early 1950s as a vibes player. In 1954 he formed the Cal Tjader Modern Mambo Quintet, and for 25 years after that, he became the leading musician on the vibes in Latin music. From mambo to Afro-Cuban jazz, Latin soul to Brazilian music/bossa nova, bebop to Latin funk, Cal became a global superstar of the vibraphone across the jazz spectrum, recording dozens of albums for labels like Fantasy, Verve, Skye and Concord Jazz.
Tonight, expect to hear Cal Tjader classics performed live by some of the UK's finest salsa and Latin jazz musicians who have played with Orchestra Mambo International, La Clave, Grupo X, The Haggis Horns, The New Mastersounds, Matthew Halsall, Penya, Casa Latina Allstars, Joe Bataan, Tito Allen and Jimmy Bosch.
Led by vibes player John Settle from top UK band Orchestra Mambo International, the full line up features fellow band members from that ensemble. They are timbalero Jim Le Mesurier, pianist Andrejz Baranek, conga player Sam Bell, and bongosero Camilo Ochoa. Plus double bass player Josh Cavanaugh.
