Sink into the subtle subconscious body.
Open up the multidimensional room within without boundaries.
Experience the journey of the cosmic fetus with Gio Ju, the midwife of Subbody Butoh.
We are honoured to host Gio JU in London again for a two-day immersive workshop in Subbody Butoh. This is a rare opportunity to explore a movement practice rooted in deep listening, poetic imagination, and subconscious resonance.
At Posthuman Theatre / London Butoh Dance Company, we create platforms for transformative performance practices that explore the relationship between body, imagination, and world. Inspired by Butoh and expanded through embodied research, our work blends dance, philosophy, and experimental theatre.

Workshop Description
Day 1 – Subbody Butoh Experience
Subbody (subconscious & subtle body), where body and mind melt into one, has no concept, thought, or judgment. As pure life, it resonates with everything. In this state, there is no distinction between self and other here. Just resonates by being freely connected and separated with infinite patterns.
Subbody Butoh explores these infinite resonance patterns between oneself and the world through group experiments. It invites participants to open themselves to another dimension, becoming inhabitants of the unknown while dancing with boundless creativity.
Day 2 – Embodying Language and Imagination
Through Hijikata’s Butoh poem and cellular language, Qualia
We explore “Qualia”—a cellular language that is deeply personal, relative, resonant, and constantly changing. When we completely quiet our thoughts, multidimensional signals that transcend time and space appear and disappear inside and outside the body.We will also engage in body readings of unique Butoh poems created by Tatsumi Hijikata, the founder of Butoh, as we work to embody language and imagination.
*“In the small room, some vegetables are grown around body
There is a room inside the body
Language between joints in each finger
Mysterious density Melting
Eyes on the back
Neck stretches to the inhuman length
The strange letters drawn by fingers will not stop
What are you dreaming?
In one Tatami Mat world, in my world
Finally, are you going to stand up,
What does actually mean ‘to stand’?”*
