La Batalla del Vino: Spain’s Wildest Wine Fight
If you're in Spain at the end of June and looking for an unforgettable experience, head to Haro in La Rioja on June 29 for the Batalla del Vino, a festival where tradition meets spirited fun.
What’s the Story?
The festival dates back to a centuries-old land dispute between Haro and neighbouring Miranda de Ebro. Over time, this evolved into a friendly "battle" where locals and visitors douse each other in red wine.
The Main Event:
Early Morning (around 7 AM): Participants, dressed in white with red scarves, make their way to the Riscos de Bilibio.
Mass at the Hermitage of San Felices: A traditional mass is held before the festivities begin.
The Wine Battle: Armed with bottles, water pistols, and buckets filled with red wine, everyone engages in a joyful wine fight, leaving no one dry.
Return to Haro: After the battle, participants head back to town for more celebrations, including music, dancing, and, of course, more wine.
Tips for First-Timers:
Dress Appropriately: Wear white clothes you don't mind staining; the red wine will leave its mark.
Protect Your Belongings: Use waterproof bags or covers for phones and valuables.
Stay Hydrated: It's a long day; drink water between wine battles.
Book Early: Accommodations in Haro fill up quickly during the festival.
Why Go?
It's not just about the wine; it's about experiencing a unique blend of history, culture, and community spirit. Whether you're a wine enthusiast or just looking for a memorable adventure, the Batalla del Vino offers an experience like no other.
