Location: Loch Ore Meadows Country Park
Duration: 8 weeks (Every Tuesday evening).
Session Length: 1.5 – 2 hours per session
Who’s it for? Complete beginners looking to build confidence and skills on the water
Goal: To progress from basic paddleboarding techniques to confidently paddling on open water, with a potential gentle river paddle in the final week
Phase 1: Foundations & Confidence (Weeks 1-4)
Focus: Essential skills, balance, and safety
Week 1: Introduction to Paddleboarding & Water Safety
Equipment overview (boards, paddles, leashes, buoyancy aids)
Safe entry and exit from the water
Getting on/off the board safely
Basic paddle strokes (forward stroke, stopping, turning)
Kneeling balance practice
Week 2: Standing Up & Self-Rescue
Proper foot placement for standing
Core balance techniques
Falling safely and getting back on the board
Paddle stroke improvement
First short group paddle
Week 3: Turning & Maneuvering Skills
J-turns, sweep strokes, and cross-body paddling
Improving control and board positioning
Practicing self-rescue in deeper water
Group paddle for confidence-building
Week 4: Paddling with Confidence in Different Conditions
Handling slight wind and small waves
Learning to read water conditions
Practicing paddling in a straight line
Increasing paddle endurance
Phase 2: Open Water & Moving Water Progression (Weeks 5-8)
Focus: Endurance, efficiency, and handling flowing water
Week 5: Longer Distance & Open Water Skills
Small group paddle covering a longer distance (2-3 km)
Learning energy-efficient paddling techniques
Self-rescue practice in open water
Week 6: Adapting to Wind & Choppier Waters
Adjusting strokes for changing conditions
Navigating small waves and wind
Practicing safe exits and water awareness
Week 7: Introduction to Flowing Water
Basics of gentle river paddling
Understanding currents, eddies, and river safety
Ferry gliding and positioning in moving water
Week 8: Final Challenge -
River Paddle & Skills Recap
A gentle river paddle incorporating all learned skills
Self-rescue in mild currents
Celebratory group paddle to wrap up the course!
Programme Outcome -
By the end of the 8 weeks, you’ll have developed solid paddleboarding skills, confidence, and the ability to handle different water conditions, including gentle moving water. This is the perfect introduction for beginners looking to progress in a safe and structured way! Bonus feature - Lots of new paddleboarding pals!
