Join the for the dedication of its 12th historic marker dedication, honoring Loch Sheldrake’s vibrant Borscht Belt history! The evening kicks off with a marker dedication ceremony at 6:00 p.m. at the corner of Route 52 and Loch Sheldrake Road.
Afterward, meet us at Vacation Village (712 Loch Sheldrake-Hurleyville Rd), formerly known as the Evans Hotel. Enjoy a meal at the King of Delancey, then head to the iconic Bronco Room Nightclub for a special screening of A Walk on the Moon!
The highly praised film vividly portrays the lively culture of Catskill bungalow colonies, with the 1969 moon landing serving as its backdrop. Featuring Diane Lane, Liev Schreiber, Viggo Mortensen, and Tovah Feldshuh, the movie takes inspiration from bungalow colonies like Dr. Locker’s in Mountain Dale and Silverstein’s in Swan Lake, where screenwriter Pamela Gray spent her summers.
ABOUT THE BORSCHT BELT HISTORICAL MARKER PROJECT:
Established in August 2022, the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project is a group of locals, artists & historians dedicated to commemorating the history of the Borscht Belt. Our mission is to celebrate the era's impact on Jewish history, Catskill history and American culture via the creation of a large-scale historic marker trail. Our historic markers feature QR codes and photographs, creating an interactive experience for visitors of all ages and backgrounds. When complete the 20-marker trail will be united by a self-guided audio driving tour.
The Marker Project is designed to engage both those who lived through the Borscht Belt era and those newly intrigued by it. Beyond guiding visitors through a literal roadmap of history, the Marker Project, along with its accompanying public programs rolled out at each historic marker dedication, fosters community engagement, a sense of social connection, and deepens the relationship citizens and visitors have with the region's vibrant past.
Prior to our initiative, there were no historical markers commemorating the Borscht Belt era. As of now, we have established with plans to expand to by the end of 2025.
The Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project goes beyond just markers. It includes a variety of initiatives such as film screenings, exhibitions, bus tours, and events celebrating authors, literature, comedy, music, and more. The project aims to be a fun, educational endeavor that invites people to experience the physical places tied to this history, while also promoting economic development and tourism throughout the region.
