Livonia Community Theatre is proud to present The Importance of Being Earnest as the third production of its 2024-2025 season.
The play will run for five performances in May: May 9th , 10th , 16th and 17th at 7:30pm, with an additional performance May 10th at 2:00pm.
Written by Irish wit Oscar Wilde and first performed in 1895, LCT’s production has been adapted by director Terie Spencer to highlight Wilde’s irreverent send-up of Victorian high society with a touch of modernity. Spencer explains: “Wilde wrote many inside jokes and gay-coded messages into the play that would have amused his friends but gone over the heads of most of London’s
upper-class playgoers. However, to have an openly queer character would have been unthinkable. Algernon, the dandified character most closely associated with Wilde himself, was written as outwardly heterosexual.
While studying the play and some of the extensive scholarship surrounding it, I began to wonder what Earnest may have looked like if Wilde—as Algernon— had been able to express himself freely. The result is my adaptation, which creates an 1895 London in which all gender expression is accepted, and everyone is free to live their best life. The result is a joyful and dare I say, hilarious, presentation of one of the greatest comedies of all time.”
