About this Event

Part of the 'Bringing Life' lecture programme organised by this year's president of Liverpool Medical Institution, Professor Andrew Weeks.

James Drife is Emeritus Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University of Leeds.

Born in Cardiff and raised in Ayrshire, Jim Drife graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1971. He trained as an obstetrician and gynaecologist in Edinburgh and Bristol and was a senior lecturer and NHS consultant in Leicester before becoming a professor in Leeds in 1990. His main interests were contraception and maternal mortality. He worked as a consultant to the World Health Organisation in Eastern Europe and Central Asia before retiring from practice in 2009.

He has been Clinical Director of the UK Confidential Enquiries into Maternal Deaths, a Vice-President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists and, for eleven years, an elected member of the GMC. He was Editor-in-Chief of the European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and has edited a number of medical books. Between 1988 and 2013 he wrote a regular column for the British Medical Journal, now collected as “This Medical Life”.

His hobby is songwriting. He and Walter Nimmo formed Abracadabarets in 1974 and have appeared a dozen times on the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, most recently with “The Fabulous Chopin Boys” in 2012. Their CDs are available at www.abracadabarets.com.

His wife, Diana, is a retired GP, and their children and grandchildren live in London.
