Join us for our monthly meeting featuring Toby Vaughan! Toby is going to pitch a doubleheader! He’s going to not only share insights about his home water, the Beaver Tailwater in northwest Arkansas, but also discuss Reel Recovery, a program for men living with or recovering from any form of cancer. A bunch of us know Toby from Reel Recovery and Casting for Recovery volunteer work so we know he’s going to be good!
The Beaver Tailwater, located below Beaver Dam near Eureka Springs, is a scenic and accessible stretch of the White River known for year-round trout fishing. It supports stocked rainbow and brown trout, with occasional trophy-sized fish (AGFC’s 2024 electrofishing survey found a monster brown trout that was over 29 inches...along with some walleye and a smallmouth that was almost 20!). Beaver offers 7.5 miles of wading and floating and has public access points like Beaver Dam Site Park and Houseman Access which make it easy to reach prime water before entering Table Rock Lake. With its consistent trout population, manageable flows, and natural Ozark beauty, the Beaver Tailwater should be on our ‘to do’ list.
Reel Recovery is a national nonprofit that offers free fly-fishing retreats for men living with cancer. These 3 day programs combine expert-led fly fishing with “Courageous Conversations,” supportive group discussions where participants can share their experiences. No fishing experience is required, and all gear, lodging, meals, and instruction are provided at no cost—participants only need to arrange transportation. Held in scenic, natural settings, the retreats foster healing through nature, camaraderie, and personal reflection. Each participant is paired with a volunteer “Fishing Buddy” for guidance and connection. The goal is to provide a safe, respectful environment where men can relax, learn a new skill, and find strength in community. Since 2003, Reel Recovery has helped thousands of men across the U.S. rediscover joy and resilience in the face of cancer.
