I am honored to be hosting my dear friends and world renowned glass bead artists, Tom and Sage Holland for a special talk about beads and the significance they play in the history of the world. Tom Holland will use his love for story telling to weave together the adventure that he and his partner Sage have had following the ancient history of glass beads and their important relationship to many cultures throughout history.
Tom's presentation, "Ancient Inspirations for Contemporary Work," will show a wide selection of images obtained from over 30 years of research in Museums and private bead collections and show how he and Sage are inspired by these techniques and use them in their work.
About Tom and Sage:
Tom Holland received his BFA in Ceramics with a Minor on Sculpture at Northwest Mo. State University 1977. In the early 1980s Tom had careers as a potter,blacksmith and stone mason in stone county Ark where he still lives today, In his teens Tom developed a love for all things Native American.He had a troupe leader that exposed him to the Material Culture of the American Plains Indians from the late 1700s and early 1800s just before and after Lewis and Clark. Tom was especially captivated with the beaded Indian regalia and sacred objects.The journey eventually led him all over the Nation studying and researching on the subject of old beads and ultimately their manufacture.
Tom Holland started actually making glass beads full time in 1989 after careers as a potter ,blacksmith and stone mason in Stone county Ark.
Sage started Making glass beads while living in Washington State in 1987 before moving to Stone County Arkansas in 1993. She is known as one of America's pioneers in the field of contemporary glass beadmaking.
