Saturday in the Wild: Russel Rowland

Join us for an evening of honest storytelling and Western introspection with Russell Rowland, fourth-generation Montanan and acclaimed author, as he shares insights from his latest memoir, BE A MAN: Raised in the Shadow of Cowboys (released January 31, 2025).

In this deeply personal and thought-provoking book, Rowland reflects on what it means to grow up male in the American West — a place where strength is often valued over vulnerability. With roots on a Southeastern Montana cattle ranch, he unpacks his family’s legacy and how it shaped their responses to grief, addiction, domestic violence, and self-worth.

Through vivid storytelling and candid exploration, Rowland examines the myths of masculinity shaped by Western history, media, and tradition — and asks what it takes to break free from those narratives.
