Ever wanted to learn some new skills? This is the event for you! We are offering skills workshops taught by women for women. Ticket price includes 1 choice of a breakout session, snacks, and the general session.
Breakout Session #1 – Home Repair Class
This class will offer the following:
* Drywall patch & repair – demo plus hands on learning
* Breaker box basics
* Smoke detector maintenance
Instructors: Carlen Ellis & Morgan Gavia
Carlen Ellis is a business development professional with Servpro-Team Cox, where she helps people recover and rebuild after unexpected disasters. She also volunteers with the American Red Cross, responding to local emergencies and offering support during times of crisis. Carlen serves on the board of the National Association of Women in Construction, where she mentors and uplifts women pursuing purpose in male-dominated fields. With a background in Communications and a heart rooted in faith, Carlen is passionate about helping women grow through what they go through – and trusting God with every step.
Morgan Gavia is an agent factotum for Contract Flooring Services, Inc, a commercial and residential flooring sales and installation company servicing the southeast. Her focus is on the greater Columbia area. Morgan studied business and accounting in Charleston before making her way up to Columbia where she eventually started a family and a career. She grew up in a DIY family so the trades or construction industry has always called to her. When Morgan isn’t working she is with her family – either on the water, hiking, or camping in the woods – always looking for their next adventure.
Breakout Session #2 – Decorative Bow Making
Learn how to make decorative bows for all your craft projects! In this class we will be learning 3 bow making techniques with pointers on different ways to use and attach them to your projects. If you are a crafty person, this is the class for you.
Instructor: Dee Bowers
“I received my love of crafting from by Grandma Cooper. She loved crafting of all kinds. She taught me all kinds of crafts, embroidery, crochet, beading, etc. Her passion, however, was quilting. I loved watching her stitch the quilts by hand. I have three of her quilts and still enjoy admiring her work. She had a lot more patience than I do! As much as I love crafting, I need to see the finished product a lot quicker! Lol! When my husband, Ralph, and I married (many years ago), his sister, a florist, taught me the basics or arranging flowers and how to make bows. I loved everything about it – I had found my passion! I went on to get my certifications in Basic Floral Design, Wedding, and Funeral Design. These classes included the art of bow making. I really enjoyed learning to make bows and still love making them.
The last couple of years, ribbon makers have developed some new techniques and designs. One of these being using different widths, fabrics, and colors in the same design, which we will cover in class.
Gale and I discussed teaching a class in bow making a long while back. That being said, in loving memory of her, it would be my honor to share this fun craft with all the Sister Chicks.”
General Session – Budgeting
This is a class that can benefit everyone, from the new to budgeting to the budget queen. In this class, we will touch on savings, budgeting, and paying off debt. At the end of this class, you will have the know-how and a plan to save for purchases, be encouraged to start a budget, and HATE debt.
Instructor: Jennifer Baldwin
Jennifer grew up in Lancaster, SC, and learned the value of serving others through her small church. After earning a Marketing degree from Clemson, she began her career in banking, helping people manage finances and plan for long-term goals. In 2011, she began teaching Financial Peace University and still co-facilitates annually. After time at home with her daughters, Jennifer became an admin assistant for her church’s Children’s Program. She then joined McGuinn Homes in 2021 and she is currently the Executive Director of McGuinn Homes foundation which supports nonprofits throughout our community. Jennifer has been married to her husband, Richard, for 24 years and they have two daughters, Mabrey (13) and Ella (11). They enjoy movie nights, America’s Got Talent, and traveling.
Worship Leaders
Ruth Ellen Lorick – Ruth Ellen is a current student at CIU double majoring in Music and Bible. She volunteers with the worship team at her church, Lexington Presbyterian, and loves finding new music genres and artists in her free time. Ruth Ellen finds joy in glorifying God through singing with others.
Summer Mangicaro – Summer is also a student at CIU majoring in Music. She is a worship leader and preschool director at Columbia First Church of the Nazarene.
