Lexington, KY— Lexington, KY—Antagonist Productions proudly presents Skater Girls, by Kentucky playwright Matt Morse. Directed by Treyton Blackburn, Skater Girls celebrates community theatre – in the same way that a celebrity roast celebrates a moderately-problematic cultural icon. In a series of skating lessons, Kate, Tyler, and their friend-turned-skating-coach Lou, prepare for a Xanadu audition while angling to get ahead in life and on-stage. When the laughter settles, Skater Girls is a poignant analysis of diversity, intersectionality, and human nature. Skater Girls serves as the second production of Antagonist Productions 2025 season, reaffirming the company’s long-standing commitment to supporting and showcasing the work of local playwrights.
Opening night will be May 9th, and the production will run through Sunday, May 11th. Showtime will be 8:00 p.m. on May 9th & 10th and at 2:30 p.m. on May 11th. Skater Girls will be performed in our new creative space at 2520 Regency Rd, Suite 140, Lexington, KY. General Admission will be $20, and $15 for students.
There will be a talkback with Playwright Matt Morse, Director Treyton Blackburn, and the cast on Friday May 9th immediately following the performance.
In summarizing the importance of the show, playwright Matt Morse and director Treyton Blackburn drafted this illuminating joint statement: “Skater Girls satirizes the self-aggrandizing that arises when artistic expression intersects with the hustle culture of late capitalism. Kate and Tyler inflate their Xanadu audition because it is an opportunity to elevate their status. Lou, discordantly, becomes an invaluable resource to Kate and Tyler despite their actively mistreating them. This undercurrent espouses community theatre as a microcosm of the increasingly cutthroat culture of performers in America over the ideal of a collaborative, welcoming space.”
This will be the world premiere of Skater Girls following two off-broadway developmental readings at 938collective and Forager Theatre.
