Save Our Downtown!!
Following the rezoning of Aylesford for The Maxwell and Subtext projects, Core Spaces (the HUB) is proposing the largest complex yet that will encompass the entire block bounded by Rose, Kalmia, Stone, and Maxwell. Eight stories high with no real step-backs, it will trigger the demolition of 12 National Register-listed properties and tower over the adjacent local historic district in violation of the 2045 comp plan.
Crucially, this area is densely settled, consists entirely of historic properties, and includes some of Lexington’s earliest purpose-built, multi-family housing. These units constitute the so-called “missing middle” that cities across the country are eager to create. In their place, Core Spaces will build an upscale, privatized dorm that caters to the exact same demographic as The Maxwell and Subtext. Moreover, they will completely remove the tree canopy and provide parking for 485 vehicles while neglecting to offer any “community-oriented component.”
Core Spaces believes that these historic resources are insignificant, but we beg to differ.
The Bluegrass Trust will speak against the HUB project at the September 25 Planning Commission meeting (1:30, Govt Center). We invite our supporters, and Aylesford residents in particular, to attend and make their voices heard.
Anyone intending to deliver a 3-minute public comment before the Planning Commission may contact Zak Leonard (
