Frank Cloke - a talented jazz bassist, dedicated music educator and Band Director at Mifflinburg Senior High School - brings his deep musical roots and improvisational spirit to the stage, joined by trombonist Bill Grose, tenor sax Joe Stanford, drummer Urie Kline and guitarist Jerry Bresee. Together, they’ll create something that can’t be rehearsed, repeated, or replicated: a one-of-a-kind performance built entirely on the art of improvisation.
Leader Frank Cloke is a jazz bassist and music educator from East Stroudsburg now based in Central PA. He is the Band Director at Mifflinburg Area High School and runs the concert and marching bands as well as the modern band program. He studied jazz at Penn State University (2024) under Joshua Davis, Rick Hirsch, and Patricia Weitzel. He’s performed with pianist Emmet Cohen and other notable jazz artists.
Tenor Sax man Joe Stanford is from Langhorne, PA and studied music education at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. He studied classical saxophone with Dr. James Umble and jazz studies with Dave Kana, Kent Engelhardt and Dave Morgan. He currently teachers general music at Mifflinburg intermediate school.
Trombonist Bill Grose is a music educator based in Selinsgrove, PA, currently teaching in the Mifflinburg Area School District. He earned his undergraduate degree from Susquehanna University and a master’s degree from Ithaca College. As a trombonist, Bill has performed with a variety of ensembles including the Greater Finger Lakes Jazz Orchestra, Northern Dutchess Symphony Orchestra, The New York Wind Symphony, Penn Central Wind Band, Billtown Brass, Williamsport Symphony, Lycoming Trombone Consortium, Spencer and the T-Bones, and A Long Way from California.
Urie Kline is a versatile drummer and percussionist active in Williamsport, Lewisburg, and State College. He performs regularly with the Cadillac Cats, Eric Ian Farmer, La Fiesta Latin Band, and the eponymous Urie Kline Band. He currently teaches at Lycoming College, Bucknell University, and Robert M. Sides. Urie currently resides in Williamsport with his wife and two cats.
Guitarist Jerry Bresee comes to the group with extensive experience on the Washington DC jazz scene, playing for 12 years with the 18-piece Loudoun Jazz Ensemble, Mad Dog Jazz quintet, the String Theory Jazz Trio and here in Central PA with Jazz on 16 Strings, a quartet based around two guitars and bass.
Their collective experience, combined with their openness to the unexpected, makes for a thrilling, spontaneous show where no two notes are planned—but every note has a purpose.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to watch music being created in real time, here’s your chance. You don’t need to “know” jazz—you just need to be there.
