Tristan Perich is een componist en geluidskunstenaar uit New York. Hij staat bekend om het gebruik van ‘1-bit’ elektronica, een zeer simpele vorm van digitaal geluid. Die computer-achtige klanken combineert Perich dan met akoestische instrumenten, zoals piano, strijkers of … het orgel. Zijn nieuwe werk Infinity Gradient is een muzikaal hoogstandje voor kerkorgel en honderd (!) 1-bit luidsprekers. De inspiratiebron voor Perich was de monumentale schaal van het pijporgel. Daartegenover zet hij dus een elektronisch orkest van honderd speakertjes in verschillende groottes. Elke luidspreker speelt zijn eigen muzikale partij, gebaseerd op herhalende patronen van hoge frequenties. In combinatie met het akoestische orgel ontstaat er zo een dense, meerstemmige wolk van geluid. Organist van dienst is James McVinnie, die een meester is in early music maar ook al samenwerkte met Squarepusher en Philip Glass. Verwacht een hypnotische trip waar elektronische en orgelklanken in elkaar versmelten, versterkt door de majestueuze galm van de barokke Sint-Michielskerk. Het Contiusorgel wordt sinds de renovatie in 2018 beschouwd als een van de beste orgels in België.

Tristan Perich — Infinity Gradient

Tristan Perich is a composer and sound artist from New York. He is known for his use of ‘1-bit’ electronics, a very simple form of digital sound. Perich combines these computer-like sounds with acoustic instruments such as piano, strings, or ... the organ. His new work Infinity Gradient is a musical tour-de-force for church organ and one hundred (!) 1-bit speakers. Perich's inspiration was the monumental scale of the pipe organ. He contrasts this with an electronic orchestra of a hundred speakers of various sizes. Each speaker plays its own musical part, based on repeating patterns of high frequencies. In combination with the acoustic organ, this creates a dense, polyphonic cloud of sound. The organist on duty is James McVinnie, who is a master of early music but also has already collaborated with Squarepusher and Philip Glass. Expect a hypnotic trip where electronic and organ sounds merge, amplified by the majestic reverberation of the baroque St. Michael's Church. Since its renovation in 2018, the Contius organ has been considered one of the best organs in Belgium.

Over het Contiusorgel
Van 2018 tot 2021 installeerde de Contius Foundation een barok Bach-orgel in de Sint-Michiel Vredeskerk in Leuven. Het orgel is een reconstructie van het instrument dat de 18e-eeuwse orgelbouwer H.A. Contius bouwde in Liepaja (Letland). Volgens orgelkenners is dit Contiusorgel een van de beste orgels die ons land rijk is.
Sinds 2021 is de Contius Foundation professioneel actief in het kunstenlandschap en maakt ze een professionele muzikaal-culturele uitwisseling op en rond het Contiusorgel mogelijk. De meerwaarde van de Contius Foundation situeert zich op het vlak van educatie, maatschappelijk engagement, internationale samenwerking en dit in combinatie met een uitmuntende en uitgebreide artistieke programmering: deze elementen worden rond geen enkel ander orgel in Vlaanderen samengebracht zoals dat rond het Contiusorgel wél het geval is.

About the Contius organ
From 2018 to 2021, the Contius Foundation installed a Baroque Bach organ in the Sint-Michiel Vredeskerk in Leuven. The organ is a reconstruction of the instrument built by the 18th-century organ builder H.A. Contius in Liepaja (Latvia). According to organ experts, this Contius organ is one of the best organs in our country.
Since 2021, the Contius Foundation has been professionally active in the arts landscape, facilitating professional musical and cultural exchanges in and around the Contius organ. The added value of the Contius Foundation lies in the areas of education, social engagement and international cooperation, combined with an excellent and extensive artistic programme: these elements are brought together around no other organ in Flanders as they are around the Contius orga
