SPINE FLOW
Improvisations around "Material for the Spine"
Contact Improvisation Workshop with Daniel Rojasanta
Leipzig, Germany
11-12 October 2025
"This workshop offers an introduction to the basic principles of Material for the Spine, helping to develop smoother engagement of the spine in movement and exploring ways to apply this material in improvisational group practice.
SPINE FLOW includes somatic exercises and movement techniques to train the mobility of the spine and its coordination with the rest of the body, especially the limbs and head. The workshop explores exercises focusing on the musculoskeletal system and inner sensations, and introduces new ways to apply them in duo practice. Participants will investigate how the body works, how anatomy functions in interaction with inner and outer forces, and how to embody stability, softness, strength, adaptability, and grounding.
This workshop balances somatics, technique, and playfulness within the broader context of improvisational dance and Contact Improvisation.
What is Material for the Spine?
Developed over 20 years by Steve Paxton, Material for the Spine draws on his experiences in walking studies, Contact Improvisation, Aikido, and dance, focusing on the functional dynamics of the human spine."
