A Yogic Perspective for the Dance of Life

With Šuka Horn and James Boag

17th-19th October

For millennia, humans have used participative song, dance and story for healing, building community and for passing on wisdom teachings.
This weekend, we will deepen our embodied understanding of the yogic vision as a practical means to work with our human nature and live with greater presence, purpose and joy.

We will look in particular at the metaphor of Life as a dance and at embodiment of yogic principles through a range of dance inspired and holistic movement practices, all framed through resonant story and symbolic teachings from the yoga tradition, with song, inquiry and communication exercises along the way.

About the facilitators

Šuka Horn was born and raised in Germany, where he began early training in martial arts and music. At 12, he discovered breakdancing, which sparked his passion for dance and eventually led him to earn a Dance degree from Codarts University in Rotterdam. After working on projects across Thailand, Spain, and the Netherlands, he moved to Athens in 2020 to join Dimitris Papaioannou’s production Transverse Orientation, followed by the duet INK with Papaioannou himself. While touring the world with these productions, Šuka also deepened his studies in meditation as a private student of Mushtaq Ali al Ansari and expanded his study of human movement with Frey Faust. After five years of touring, he relocated to Leipzig to focus solely on his own teaching and research. His workshops have been taught in universities, dance companies, festivals, and studios across more than 20 countries.

In his workshops, Šuka explores the meeting point of movement and awareness practices. Drawing from dance, acrobatics, somatics, and meditation, he invites participants to explore the invisible dance of attention, to experience dancing as a celebration of our anatomy, the physics of motion, and life itself, and to engage in playful interaction with the environment and other people.

Originally from Yorkshire, UK, with a degree in French and Italian, a Master’s Degree in Sanskrit from India, and having lived in several countries including many years in India, James Boag has a rare ability to bridge and communicate across cultures.

James’ Whole Life Yoga perspective offers a practical approach that goes way beyond yoga postures or particular techniques. Drawing on his love of languages, literature, story, movement and song, James’ principle-based work invites us to experience yoga in its broad and inclusive beauty, and as an immensely practical support for all aspects of human life.
With over thirty years’ teaching experience, and more than twenty soaked in the yoga and Sanskṛt traditions, James’ practice, teaching and study continue to evolve from their roots in the Shankaracaraya Vedic, Kashmiri Shaiva, and Sanskrit traditions.
With lightness and humanity, James shares a deep, embodied understanding of the classic yoga teachings as encoded in Yoga Sūtra and Bhagavad Gītā which he teaches direct from the original Sanskṛt, as well as in the rich, resonant stories of Indic mythology.

James’ students appreciate how he makes the ancient teachings highly relatable, inviting us to develop an ongoing, personal relationship with the timeless wisdom of the yoga tradition.
