Celebrate 50 years of New Zealand’s – and the world’s – first fully protected Marine Reserve with a splash!
Kick off the day with a scenic 2-km ocean swim safari around the iconic Goat Island Te Hāwere-a-Maki. (Minimum ability slow and steady 1.5km freestyle without stopping.)
Your entry supports a good cause too – $5 from every entry goes towards Te–Hāwere-a-Maki Goat Island Marine Discovery Centre, marking the 50th anniversary of Aotearoa-New Zealand’s first marine reserve. The centre supports ocean education, marine science, and conservation with a strong community focus. Based at the University of Auckland’s Institute of Marine Science here in Leigh, it’s a place for learning, curiosity, and connection to the moana.
Numbers are capped, so don’t miss out!

After the swim, visit the Marine Discovery Centre just 200m up from the beach, then head over to the Goat Island 50-Year Celebration Gala at Leigh Central (10:00am to 3:00pm). Bring the whānau and make a day of it — enjoy delicious food trucks, artisan stalls, coffee carts, live music, children’s activities, raffles, exhibitions, and much more. It promises to be a joyful community celebration honouring both our ocean and this landmark conservation milestone.
(In case of yucky weather, leave the days either side as alternate dates)
