I’ve put together a syllabus for a youth (12+) automotive class. The class will be 8 weeks long and cover quite a few of the important topics. The class will be completely hands on, and if they desire, they can bring and work on their own vehicle.
Classes will be 90-120 minutes in the evenings and will run through the summer. The cost will be $250 per student. I will have limited slots for this session.
The outline is as follows:
Week 1: Basic Maintenance
- Fluids, Tires, Filters, Lights, Belts, Battery, Jacking
Week 2: Oil Changes
- Draining, filter change, additives, proper refill, proper oil disposal
Week 3: Brakes
- Inspect, remove pads and service calipers, rotor inspection and replacement, bleed-off
Week 4: Tune up
- Spark plugs, wires, coils, fuel filter, timing and ignition sequence
Week 5: Fluid Change out
- Coolant system flush, Brake flush, transmission (check and instruction only), proper and safe fluid disposal
Week 6: Troubleshooting
- Warning lights, leaks, starting/idling issues, “listening” diagnostics, electronic diagnostics
Week 7: Major Mechanical
- Starter, Alternator, Water Pump, A/C Unit, tensioners and pulleys, radiator
Week 8: Roadside emergencies and course review
