Program Description

From board care and feeding, to best practices, to development and fundraising – this full-day, in-person workshop offers tools to keep your board engaged, invested, and included. Attendees should plan to attend the full session.

Designed for nonprofit leaders and board members to attend together, this Learning Lab workshop will help participants explore the following:

Effective care and feeding of the board:

  • Board and staff roles and responsibilities
  • The importance of the board chair and executive director relationship
  • Board assessment
  • How to make the best use of your board meeting
  • Board governance

Board best practices:

  • The board's fiduciary responsibility
  • The board's role in policy development
  • Strategic planning
  • Board committee structures
  • Board administrative practices

The role of board members in fundraising:

  • the importance of board leadership and why it is essential to successful fundraising
  • how to build an effective fundraising board
  • how to orient the board to prepare them for their role in fundraising

About the Presenters

Amy Owen, consultant with Zelos, LLC and founder of AEOwen LLC, and Nicole Acosta, President & CEO of The Community Foundation for Loudoun and Northern Fauquier Counties, have 40+ years combined of nonprofit experience, including development, nonprofit management, board governance, grant writing, and grant making.

With a successful career dedicated to fundraising, and twelve years in leadership at one of the nation's top fundraising consulting firms, Victoria Dietz, Founder and CEO of Empower Charitable, is passionate about strong partnerships. Victoria specializes in helping her clients strategically grow overall fundraising capacity and has a track record of success with clients and volunteers to thoughtfully raise significant gifts.
