The train leaves Exmouth Station at 07.55 train and arrives at Okehampton Railway Station at 9.16 (changing at Exeter St Davids where we will have 11 minutes between trains). Why so early I hear you ask. Well, it's because the bus from Okehampton train station to Tavistock only runs for alternate trains into Okehampton. There is a bus to Tavistock every hour, but only every two hours from the railway station. Meaning if we got the train an hour later, we would have to walk down to West Street in Okehampton to get the bus, but wouldn't get down in time for that bus and would have to wait about 45 minutes for the bus next bus, therefore arriving in Tavistock at about 12.30.
So the 07.55 train arrives at Okehampton at 9.16, The bus leaves the railway station at 09.30, so we have time for a wee at the station, but not long enough for a coffee.
The bus journey is lovely with beautiful views of the moors. Arrival time at Tavistock is 10.23 where you will have just under four hours to do as you please - coffee, walk by the river, shopping (there is an arts market in Butchers Hall that day), lunch. I returned after 2 hours on Saturday as I wasn't having lunch on my own and needed to be back in Exmouth for an evening commitment, and that wasn't long enough to do everything there.
So I propose that we return on 14.20 bus which gets us to Okehampton station for 15.16, and the 15.25 train back to Exmouth, arriving 16.52 (19 minutes changeover in Exeter St Davids).
If you would like to lunch as a group, I can reserve a table at Karen's Restaurant in Brook Street. It's a down to earth eatery where the owner and staff are lovely, and they do offer a range of food from snacks to full meals. It's also licensed for those wanting a wine or pint with their lunch.
The bus goes past the Lydford Gorge entrance so you have the option of stopping there instead of going to Tavistock if you prefer.
The train fare on 31st May was £11.30 return, or £7.50 with a railcard. The bus fare for those without bus passes was £5.60 return.
