Join us for class with Dennis Wichter of Las Vegas Worm Farm at Mojave Bloom Nursery. Class will be free and open to all. When you're gardening in the blazing Las Vegas heat, understanding the natural partnership between plants and soil isn't just helpful—it’s survival-level science.
This presentation dives into:
Soil vs Dirt – Dirt is dead; soil is alive. Out here, soil life is your best ally against heat and drought.
Above and Below – What you see (leaves/photosynthesis) relies on what you don’t (microbes/nutrient exchange).
Organic Material – Adding compost and mulch helps retain moisture and feed the biology.
Organisms – Beneficial microbes, worms, fungi, and more create a microscopic symphony that cools and nourishes plants from the root up.
Plant Language – Yes, plants “talk” to each other and to microbes. The healthier the soil, the better the conversation.
The Symbiosis – It’s a team effort. The more biodiversity below ground, the stronger your plants grow above it—especially critical under the Vegas sun.
In short: biologically active soil is the secret to thriving gardens in summer. Feed the soil, protect it with mulch, and let nature do the heavy lifting—even when the temperature hits triple digits.
