PICACHO PEAK GUIDED HIKE PT 2

Location: Picacho Peak Recreation Area, Las Cruces, NM
Duration: 3.5 to 4 hours
Total Distance: About 3.5 miles. Our guides will make frequent stops along the way.

Ever wondered about that volcano in our backyard or what the “Butterfield Trail” was? Join us for a scenic, guided hike in the Picacho Peak Recreation area of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument and learn about the national monument, the geology of our area and the historic Butterfield Overland Trail. This hike does not go to the peak but around the area. Please note that this hike is Part 2 of a two-part series and will have a stronger emphasis on the history of the area.

Trail Conditions & Gear:

This hike is rated moderate due to some rocky and sandy terrain, uneven ground, and a few short inclines and descents. Hiking poles and comfortable hiking shoes or boots will be helpful and hikers should bring at least 1 liter of water. No water or restrooms will be available on this hike. Remember to dress for the weather and check weather conditions before the hike.

Driving Directions:

Take US Highway 70 west from Las Cruces to Picacho Hills. Turn north on Picacho Hills Drive and after 1 mile continue west on Barcelona Ridge Road. Travel 1 mile west and turn north on Anthem Road. Follow Anthem Road for 1 mile to its end. Turn north on Picacho Mountain Loop Road (unpaved) and follow this for 1.5 miles to the trailhead parking area. A 4-wheel drive vehicle is recommended due to some rough and sandy areas in the unpaved road
