Love & Brunch: MERMAIDS @ Alamo Drafthouse

It's only 1963, but for Rachel Flax – Mrs. Flax, to you – the sexual revolution is already underway. Uninhibited and uncontrollable, Rachel (Cher, in sterling sexy/sassy/sensitive form) is a free spirit who breezes from town to town (and man to man), leaving a trail of broken hearts in her wake and dragging her two daughters along for the ride.

For 6-year-old aspiring swimming champ Kate (an adorable Christina Ricci), this is all just a big adventure; conservative older sister Charlotte (Winona Ryder) sees things quite differently, however. A Jewish girl who desires nothing more than security, stability, and a future career as a nun, Charlotte has been through 18 moves in 16 years and is delighted when the trio settles in a New England town at a cozy cottage not far from a convent. While Rachel finds an adoring suitor named Lou (Bob Hoskins), Charlotte is both terrified and intrigued by her first feelings of attraction to local handyman Joe (Michael Schoeffling, SIXTEEN CANDLES). Still, it remains to be seen if love can tame Mrs. Flax's restless nature.

Based on Patty Dann's marvelous novel, MERMAIDS is irresistible and a first-class showcase for its three luminous leading ladies. (James Sanford)
