Join us for this free smARTS Workshop delving into the ins and outs of superb volunteer management and engagement plus a light lunch at Allen Neighborhood Center on May, 8, 2025, from 12-2 p.m. The more you know about being a great manager, the easier it will be for you to find the volunteers you need.
Most likely, your organizations depends depends on a mix of volunteers, AmeriCorps members, interns, fellows, staff and others in these essential roles. But how do we define them clearly, manage them sustainably, and retain them effectively?
This workshop digs into the real-world dynamics of volunteer engagement, sustainability, and retention. Led by professionals with experience across nonprofit service, community development, and arts education, this session will offer insights and tools to help you. Whether you're building a new program, or refining a long-standing structure, you'll leave with ideas, tools, and relationships to support your people-powered work.
After the session, we’ll share a meal and make space to connect with fellow organizations doing similar work across the region.

Meet your presenters:
Maria Paton
Maria is the AmeriCorps program coordinator at CEDAM, supporting members serving Michigan nonprofits and municipalities. An AmeriCorps alum herself, she’s worked in disaster recovery, emergency preparedness, and volunteer management across the country. Before joining CEDAM, Maria led the Disaster Cycle Services Program at the Red Cross in Mid-Michigan.
Ethan Schmitt
Ethan is the volunteer & communications manager at Allen Neighborhood Center and an active Eastside resident. He’s passionate about making sure volunteers feel valued and informed, using social media and newsletters to keep the community engaged. Outside of work, Ethan enjoys reading, cooking, exploring the River Trail—and all things Star Trek.
Shari Merten
Shari is the Arts Council of Greater Lansing’s AmeriCorps member, with a background in arts education and community engagement. Before moving to Lansing, she ran public programs and volunteer docents at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse. She’s committed to access and inclusion in the arts—and loves Lansing’s trails and time with her cat.
