About the event

Marland Wines: Tasting & Winecraft Discussion with Winemaker James Lester
We invite you to join us and James Lester, co-owner and winemaker of Marland Wines, for a private wine tasting & pairings and a discussion of his approach to winemaking in the beautiful OTGS courtyard. This will be an intimate, ticketed event, where James will discuss his wines and Old-World style over selected pours and pairings. Tickets are $20 each and can be purchased ahead of time by calling OTGS at (517) 487-6847. This is strictly for those 21 years of age and older.
James Lester is one of Michigan’s first fine wine pioneers. He has been growing vines and making wine in Michigan for more than 40 years, and his winemaking philosophy hasn’t changed.
In 2013, Wyncroft introduced Marland Wines. In Old English, Marland means "Land Near the Lake," and it's aptly named-Marland wines begin with 100% vinifera grapes from Southwest Michigan's Lake Michigan Shore appellation. They source their grapes from several of the area's top vineyards whose owners meet their requirements for growing practices and low crop yields. Then they carefully craft small batches of wine, in styles that allow you to enjoy them while young, both on their own or with food. Marland's production is extremely small, less than 2,000 cases annually.
The wine labels, modeled after the Arts and Crafts movement, communicate the Marland philosophy. Both the vineyard and cellar work are done by hand with extreme care and attention to detail. They conscientiously farm the vineyards to produce low yields of intense concentration. Their vineyards are on the organic side of things, but non-certified (diverse ecosystem, no irrigation, no fertilization). Marland wines are estate bottled with the labels applied by hand at the winery. They’ve built a loyal following by focusing exclusively on European grape varieties and techniques. Saying their wines are “impressive for Michigan” is a true understatement. The wines rival those from the great wine regions of the world, hence why it is time to rethink the Michigan terroir.
We can't wait to learn more from James and share his knowledge with you! Call to reserve your spot today, spaces are limited.
This event will precede our 12th anniversary party; stay for music, food, and fun!
