Join Lanesboro Arts for a free artist talk featuring Prima Jalichandra – Sakuntabhai! The event will take place at Lanesboro Arts Gallery on Friday, August 1st, from 12 – 4pm. Prima will be in the gallery from 12 pm and start their talk at 1pm. The rest of the time will be available for any questions.
Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai is a transdisciplinary artist, curator and art worker, currently based in St Paul, Minnesota. As a Thai national, raised in Europe and living in the United States of America, they grew up without any sense of national allegiance. Their artistic practice intersects with the living urgency to find new ways of shaping identity for those who cannot be placed.
Prima will give an artist talk about their recent research project, 174 / Neung Jed Si – A Short History of Thailand from which stems their work on view, Study for “My Father Ruminates on the Origin of Love (2025). The talk will be accompanied by a reading of excerpts from the publication with the same name as well as documentation of the artist’s solo exhibition at Reisig and Taylor Contemporary, Los Angeles in May/June 2025.
Neung Jed Si is a new research project that uses the artist’s family archive to create a mythic origin story for their chosen exile from Thailand. Initially conceived as a video essay, the works expanded as an immersive installation, featuring CNC sculptures, animation, multichannel video projections, image transfer on wall, a collaborative sound piece, a slide projection and publication.
Neung Jed Si begins with a meditation on love and how the lover must journey to be reunited with their beloved. Starting with Pridi Banomyong, the artist’s ancestor who was forced into self-exile by a military coup in the 40s to their parents’ long-distance relationship during their father’s studies to their decision to remain abroad, the narrative expands on their legacy of diaspora and inner alienation from their country of origin. Simultaneously, the artist’s family traces back to the historical capital of Ayutthaya and services to the king. Conflicted between these two tensions, sedentary and migrant, monarchist and revolutionary, shorelines and bodies of water become a recurring motif that represent this discomfort and desire for motion.
Prima’s work is featured in “Our Bright Unfolding” exhibition – a group exhibition embodying interconnected in motion, a much needed light uplifting the power of artistic expression as a tool for societal transformation. The artwork in ‘Our Bright Unfolding’ reflects personal and collective growth, resilience, radical acts of joy, and the power of unapologetic existence. In a time of profound upheaval when marginalized communities are increasingly under threat, this exhibition serves as a necessary reminder to lean on community, roots of resistance, and visions for change.
