Want to help ensure the success of local tree plantings? Please join your neighbors for tree planting monitoring and maintenance in Big Elk Creek State Park.
Trees improve water quality locally and in the Chesapeake Bay, help slow climate change, and improve wildlife habitat, but young saplings, even when planted in protective tubes, do much better if the plantings are regularly monitored – fallen tubes righted, invasive plants removed, and dead trees replaced. Elk Creeks Watershed Association (ECWA) is partnering with the Alliance for Chesapeake Bay Riparian Ranger program and Penn State Master Watershed Stewards to sponsor work days like this to ensure that we get the maximum benefit possible out of stream buffers, forest restoration and other tree plantings in our region.
We’ll primarily be replacing stakes and trimming trees that have grown fast and toppled their supports. We'll also remove invasive vines that have grown up in the tree tubes and marking any trees that have died so that they can be replaced. No prior training is necessary.
The work is less physically demanding than tree planting, but please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and bring any other personal items you may need such as tick/insect repellent and work gloves. Flagging tape, zip ties, and other supplies will be provided. NO porta-potty is available.
