Planning for Intergenerational Communities

This session’s presenters will make a case for incorporating intergenerational community practices into municipal planning initiatives.

  • David Rouse, FAICP will define intergenerational community planning and placemaking and make the case for why it is important for planners to address it in their work. He will then address the extent to which comprehensive plans currently address intergenerational issues, using the Lancaster, PA Comprehensive Plan as a case study. David will conclude with recommendations for how planners can apply an intergenerational lens to the comprehensive planning process, substantive contents of the plan, and plan implementation.
  • Dr. Matt Kaplan, Professor of Intergenerational Programs and Aging at Penn State University, will describe lessons learned from engaging multigenerational residents in a variety of community improvement projects. This work involved developing and testing initiatives in community settings that function as intergenerational activity hubs and support intergenerational civic engagement and placemaking. The process includes generating ideas, prioritizing them by community interest and capacity, and mobilizing local champions to co-lead implementation.

Learning Objectives

  • The growing intergenerational movement and its importance to planners
  • Applying an intergenerational lens to the comprehensive plan
  • Creating a cross-sector, interdisciplinary network to support a continuum of intergenerational community-building strategies
