We've all heard the news regarding our local food banks. Since there is a need, the bicycling community is stepping up. Just like Christmas in July, we're having Cranksgiving in May.
There is no cost to join the event, but cyclists usually spend about $15 (or however much you can) on food and supplies for others. Everything collected goes to the Lakewood Community Services Center.
How does Cranksgiving work? Riders of all ages and skill levels receive a map of nearby groceries and stores and are challenged to ride their bikes - regardless of weather - to one or more of the stores to purchase the needed items. Everything purchased must be hauled by bicycle, either in a bag, pannier, rack, or trailer. You will return to donate the food you collected to benefit your neighbors in need. Be prepared to spend about $15 (or however much you can) and ride up to fifteen miles.
Want to contribute even more? Clean out your pantry and bring non-perishable food items to the event. Organize a mini-food drive at your work or in your neighborhood. Or, if you cannot attend, you can make a food or cash donation at Beat Cycles, The Bike Spot, or Spin Bike Shop during business hours.
