HIMA USA presents The Poiesis Quartet

Inspired by its sister festival in Iceland, the Harpa International Music Academy (HIMA) USA is an intergenerational summer music academy dedicated to the study and performance of solo and chamber string music.

As part of its Saga String Quartet Program, HIMA USA proudly presents one of today’s most promising young ensembles, The Poiesis Quartet, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13 in Hoover Auditorium.

Their quartet’s name, Poiesis, comes from the Greek word meaning “to make,” “to fashion” or “to shape.” It shares the same root as the words poetry and onomatopoeia, reflecting the group’s artistic approach to music-making.

Formed at the Oberlin Conservatory, The Poiesis Quartet features violinists Sarah Ma and Max Ball, violist Jasper de Boor and cellist Drew Dansby.

The group is a 2023 Grand Prize winner of the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and winner of the 2024 Concert Artists Guild Competition.

Within their first year playing together, the quartet earned major accolades, including Fischoff’s Senior Strings Gold Medal and the Lift Every Voice prizes, and Gold Medal and BIPOC Prize at the 2023 St. Paul String Quartet Competition.
