Third Place Books welcomes illustrator Michelle Jing Chan and author Chloe Ito Ward for a storytime featuring Michelle's new book Mamie Tape Fights to Go to School, which tells the true story of an eight-year-old Chinese-American girl fighting to end school segregation in 1880s California, and Chloe's new book Made for More, a joyful exploration of immigration and nontraditional beauty.
This storytime is free and open to the public. RSVP is not required, and walk-ins are encouraged!

Hurley made its way up to the California Supreme Court, which ruled that children of Chinese heritage had the right to a free public school education. But even then, Mamie’s fight wasn’t over.

Michelle Jing Chan is a Chinese American illustrator who grew up in Colorado and now lives in the Pacific Northwest. When she's not drawing, you can find her attempting TikTok recipes, curling up with a new book, or binge-watching spooky TV shows.
Chloe Ito Ward is the author of Love Grows Here, illustrated by Violet Kim, and Made for More, illustrated by Gael Abary. Her other books, Chopsticks Are and All The Ways We Learn arrive in 2026. A former curriculum director, Chloe has a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction. She spent the last decade teaching kindergarten, where she discovered her passion for picture books. When Chloe isn’t perfecting her ramen recipe, you can find her rock climbing or chasing her husband, son, and their imaginary dog Miso across Kalapaki beach.
