Student Presentation, How the Lebanese Built Lafayette

Hinton Thornton, the recipient of the 2024-2025 Frank de Caro Memorial Undergraduate Award for Folklife Field Research and Media Documentation, gives his public presentation on the Lebanese community's impact on Lafayette.

Join us to hear Hinton tell of his year-long research journey creating a digital project entitled "How the Lebanese Built Lafayette: Geographies of the Lebanese in Lafayette, Louisiana." This project is a visual and auditory history of the investment in Lafayette by residents of Lebanese descent. Using interactive maps, historic photos, articles, audio interviews, Hinton has begun recording the significant contributions of early Lebanese immigrants to Lafayette, specifically in the downtown and historic district of Freetown/Port-Rico, as well as their immediate surrounding areas.

The Frank de Caro Memorial Undergraduate Award is made possible by the MJ Sindler Family Fund for Culture and Media, established by the photographer, media arts educator, and documentary television producer, Mark J. Sindler. This award aims to honor the legacy of renowned educator and folklorist Dr. Frank de Caro.
