Meet the Speakers!

Dr. Loren Cassin Sackett, Professor of Biology at UL Lafayette
"The perils of plague in prairie dogs"
Dr. Loren Cassin Sackett is an Associate Professor in the School of Biological Sciences at UL Lafayette. She also holds the South Louisiana Mid Winter Fair/BORSF Professorship in Environmental Science. Research in the Cassin Sackett Lab centers around evolutionary processes in wildlife, from adaptation to changing conditions to diversification across space and time. Originally from Colorado, Dr. Cassin Sackett received a B.A. in Psychology from Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA, and went on to earn a PhD in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of Colorado in 2012. Following this, Dr. Cassin Sackett received a postdoctoral fellowship at the Smithsonian National Zoo, where she spent three years before becoming an Assistant Professor at the University of South Florida in 2016 and then joining the UL faculty in 2018.

Carlos Campos, PhD Candidate, UL Lafayette
"Trouble in paradise: avian malaria in tropical birds in Hawaii"
Carlos Campos is a PhD Candidate whose research focuses on how environmental factors impact the genomic evolution of threatened avian species. Carlos joined the Cassin Sackett lab in the fall of 2021 after graduating with a Bachelor's in Biology from New Mexico State University where he also worked on endangered parrot population genetics.
