Astronomical Details about the Cold Moon
This Cold Moon is a significant celestial event for several reasons:
Supermoon: It will be the third and final supermoon of 2025, meaning it will appear slightly larger and brighter than usual.
High in the Sky: The Moon will take its highest path across the sky since it occurs near the winter solstice, the longest night of the year. This specific high-in-the-sky phenomenon will not happen again until 2042.
Name and Meaning
The name "Cold Moon" comes from the Mohawk people and is a fitting descriptor for the time of year when frigid temperatures begin to take hold in the Northern Hemisphere.
Other traditional names include:
Long Night Moon: Named by the Mohican, as it occurs during the longest nights of the year.
Moon Before Yule: A European name referencing the ancient Yule festival, which celebrated the return of the sun following the winter solstice.
Frost Exploding Trees Moon: A name used by the Cree people, referring to the natural phenomenon of tree sap bursting in extremely cold weather.
This moon, appearing in the sign of Gemini, is seen as a time for reflection, communication, and setting intentions for the new year.
