The Program will be What is a Prescribed Burn? Presented by Harry “Grant” Steelman, Forester, Department of Conservation-Seminole Tribe of Florida
Grant has been a wildlife biologist, prescribed fire burn boss, and wildland firefighter for 28 years in south Florida. He obtained a B.S. degree from North Carolina State University in Wildlife Conservation and a M.S. degree from Texas A&M-Kingsville in Range and Wildlife Management before being hired by the Florida Game & Freshwater Fish Commission. Grant managed the FWC Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area from 2000 to 2010 before being hired by the Seminole Tribe of Florida as the Forester. For over 20 years, Grant has taught wildland firefighters basic prescribed fire techniques, ecological effects of prescribed burning for land and wildlife, and interagency burn boss trainees. Additionally, he has participated in south and north Florida wildfire events, as well as assignments in California, Oregon, Washington, and Montana. His Wildfire qualifications include Incident Commander Type 3, Task Force Leader, Fire Effects Monitor, and Fire Behavior Observer. Recent focus has turned to remote sensing and land management with drones.
