Sanctuaries dedicated to maternal goddesses and storm gods stand out both in number and significance in Hellenistic Anatolia, raising the possibility that worship of these deities represented an important feature of identity among the indigenous populations there. By adopting a theoretical framework from Critical Indigenous Studies, we can better appreciate, first, how these sanctuaries served as sites for the ritual articulation of a communal relationship with the land, second, to what extent this relationship supported the development of a regional identity, and finally, to what extent ritual change over time was a symptom of colonial dynamics with Greek-speaking empires.
