KYOTO Design Lab will host a unique seminar for doctoral students in design and architecture to interact with philosopher Emanuele Coccia on ecology, design, and more.
Emanuele Coccia is an Associate Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS). He has been a visiting professor at universities in Tokyo, Buenos Aires, Düsseldorf, Columbia University, Harvard, and NYU. Among his publications, noteworthy titles include The Life of Plants (2016), Metamorphosis (2020), and Philosophy of the Home (2021).
Recently, he wrote a book on photo theory with Dutch photographer Viviane Sassen (Modern Alchemy, 2022), a philosophical epistolary on light with photographer Paolo Roversi (Lettres sur la lumière, 2024), and a book on fashion and philosophy with Valentino’s Creative Director Alessandro Michele (The Life of Forms: Philosophy of Re-Enchantment, 2024).
He has also co-curated exhibitions on fashion (The Many Lives of a Garment with Olivier Saillard in Trieste) and on art and ecology (Trees at the Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain in Paris and the Power Station of Art in Shanghai, 2019–2021; Dancing with All, with Yuko Hasegawa at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa).
