Join us for the next Speaker Night as we welcome Amanda Marx—retired teacher, writer, reader, and grandparent to four young boys—who will share her lifelong journey through natural history, art, and exploration.
This month, Amanda turns her attention to the botanical works of Ferdinand Bauer, the renowned natural history painter who accompanied Matthew Flinders on his 1801–1803 voyage to circumnavigate and map Australia aboard the modest 31-metre Investigator.
Bauer’s meticulous illustrations, created under challenging conditions, are widely regarded as masterpieces. As Bernard Smith noted in the 1988 bicentennial exhibition Terra Australis: The Furthest Shore, Bauer is considered by many to be “the Leonardo of natural history painting.”
To complement Bauer’s legacy, Amanda also highlights Volume 1 of Margaret Stones’ Endemic Flora of Tasmania, a stunning example of how scientific precision and artistic beauty can harmoniously coexist.
