*A brief history of the ‘Roda de Choro’ in Trieste*
The first type of Brazilian folk music emerged in the second half of the 19th century: the ‘choro’ (a Portuguese term meaning lament or cry). Popularly known as chorinho, this musical style is the backbone of traditional Brazilian instrumental music, from which many of its styles derive. Since 2018, the ‘Clube do Choro de Trieste’ has been the first club dedicated to the study of this type of music in the Friuli-Venezia-Giulia region and surrounding areas.
The idea came from musicians who had arrived from the French capital, who had experience in the ‘Club du Choro de Paris’, and who were inspired to create a study and research group focusing on Brazilian music in Trieste. Multicultural, today the ‘Clube do Choro de Trieste’ brings together musicians with different backgrounds and from different countries such as Austria, Slovenia, France, Portugal, Italy and, of course, Brazil. They usually meet at the Circolo Pečar (in Trieste) and play concerts in Italy, Slovenia and Austria. Recently, in a collaborative effort with the Circolo Arci Trieste and Arci Gong (Gorizia), they have begun to organise educational initiatives such as ¬music workshops for interested musicians as part of the “Rocket Panda Summer Days” project, with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.
In Brazil, choro is often played in ‘rodas’ (Portuguese for ‘circles’). In Trieste and the surrounding region, once every one to two months, the friends of the Choro Club Trieste invite the community to enjoy a Roda de Choro.
The Choro Club Trieste's presentation, entitled ‘a stroll through Brazilian music’, is an invitation to the public to appreciate the diversity and beauty of Brazilian music: stroll through the Chorinho, flirt with the Bossa Nova, dance Xote & Baião, and finally embrace the Samba... The ‘musical stroll’ ends in a typically Brazilian atmosphere, cheerful and festive.
Since many songs are instrumental, with sophisticated chords, colorful rhythms, enchanting melodies and full of improvisation, the public often refers to the presentation as a ‘samba jazz’ scene.
The Choro Club Trieste is an open and constantly evolving group. Anyone interested in studying and practising Brazilian music, especially chorinho, is welcome to attend the Sunday’s meetings and rehearsals.
See you at the next roda!
